South Korea's Exports Fall for Six Consecutive Month

 

Data shows that South Korea's exports fell for a six consecutive month in May.

 

According to a report from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the nation's exports dropped 9.4 percent in May from a year earlier, mainly due to sluggish shipments of chips and the weak Chinese economy.

 

The ministry said that outbound shipments amounted to 45.9 billion dollars for May, down from 50.68 billion dollars a year earlier, while imports moved down 1.9 percent to 43.64 billion dollars.

 

The country's trade surplus came to 2.27 billion dollars in May, marking 88 straight months in which exports have exceeded imports. The surplus, however, narrowed from 5.13 billion and 4 billion dollars posted in March and April.

 

The ministry highlighted that shipments of semiconductors, the country's main export good, falling a whopping 30 percent over the cited period.

 

The ministry says, however, that the strong trade performance from rechargeable batteries, electric cars and organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays made up for some of the losses.

 

 

자료에 따르면 5월 한국의 수출은 6개월 연속 감소세를 보였다.

산업통상자원부 보고서에 따르면 5월 수출은 반도체 수출 부진, 중국 경기 둔화 등의 영향으로 인해 지난해 같은 달보다  9.4% 감소했다.

산업통상자원부는 5월 수출액이 459억 달러로 지난해 같은 달의 506.8억 달러에서 감소한 반면 수입은 436억4000만 달러로 1.9% 줄었다고 밝혔다.

5월 무역흑자는 22억7000만 달러로 수출이 수입을 초과 88개월 연속 흑자를 기록했다. 하지만 3, 4월 기준 흑자 규모인 51억3000만 달러, 40억 달러에서 좁혀졌다.

산업통상자원부는 한국의 주요 수출품목인 반도체 수출이 인용된 기간 동안 무려 30%나 감소했다고 강조했다.

그러나 산업통상자원부는 이차전지, 전기자동차, 유기발광다이오드(OLED) 디스플레이 등의 수출 품목의 호조세가 손실을 일부 메꿨다고 밝혔다.
